GENERAL QUESTIONS

  • The Business of Broadway (BoB) is an education initiative founded and operated by working commercial producers dedicated to making transparent and accessible information about how the commercial theater industry operates.

Our goal is to pull back the curtain on the business of theater, democratizing knowledge that has historically created barriers to entry and collaboration.

By empowering you with facts and deeper insight into how artistry and economics intersect, we aim to create more effective collaboration built on trust and transparency—and to spark conversations about how we can reimagine and rebuild a more intentional, inclusive commercial theater model.

  • Our courses are designed for:

    • Working theater practitioners (U.S. and abroad)

    • Early-career theatremakers in the commercial or nonprofit sector

    • Artists curious about the business side of the industry

    • Aspiring producers or investors

    • Entertainment professionals interested in understanding the theater model

    • Students and educators

    • Anyone who simply loves theater and wants to learn more

  • Our educators—affectionately known as "BoBsies"—are all working commercial theater producers. We bring real-world experience straight to you, teaching in real time with up-to-date industry knowledge.

COURSES

  • We offer both introductory and deep-dive courses on topics such as:

    • Producing 101 (a great starting point)

    • 201: Creative Development and Rights

    • 202: Unions & Guilds

    • 203: Assessing and Transacting an Investment

    • Building a Social Media Strategy

We also curate specialized courses for universities, organizations, productions, and institutions. Click here to see who we have worked with in the past!

  • Our classes are designed to be taken independently, however, we strongly recommend beginning with Producing 101. All 200-level courses will reference foundational terminology and concepts covered in 101, especially Assessing & Transacting an Investment. That said, if you feel you already have a foundation of knowledge, you may choose to skip it.

  • In the spirit of accessibility, most of our classes are held live and online over Zoom.

  • Each class is different, but we usually start with quick introductions, a lecture, followed by a thirty-minute Q&A.

  • No, our live classes are not recorded. Our courses are designed to be experienced in real-time.

  • No. You are welcome to attend in listen-only mode. We want you to engage in a way that feels comfortable for you.

    • A syllabus and/or key terms for every class

    • Additional documents as applicable

    • A comprehensive list of post-class resources, articles, and readings

  • We want you to be set up to learn in the best way possible. You can share any access needs in your sign-up form, email us before class, or message us privately during class.

  • Our classes are designed for learning, not networking. While you will engage with industry professionals as instructors, the primary goal is education. However, we do offer occasional events where networking is encouraged.

  • We don’t offer job placement services, but we provide the knowledge, tools, and insight to help you navigate the business more effectively.
